What a wonderful, magical, winter wonderland, spending a week in
Austria and Germany for Christmas Markets!
In the small town of Mondsee, Austria, where the famous wedding scene from
Sound of Music was filmed, the plaza of St. Michael's holds a quaint
christmas market. All the towns people, (even though it was very cold and snowy)
gather for Gluhwein(hot spiced wine) or stand in a long line to get these amazing creations.
The fresh yeasted dough is dropped into a giant vat of hot oil. When it is handed to you
on a paper napkin, it is almost too hot to bite! Add a giant dollop of apricot jam and
a dusting of powdered sugar and you have a heavenly treat! As you can see, I could not resist
taking a bite before the photo!
May your travels one day take you to the magical christmas markets, and
hopefully to the town of Mondsee to try this local treat!
